The Certified black belt six sigma is a full-time expert who is well-versed in the Lean Six Sigma Methodology and leads difficult improvement initiatives. A black belt in six sigma has a full understanding of all components of the Lean Six Sigma Method, as well as a high degree of proficiency in the subject topics covered by the black belt six sigma Body of Knowledge’s Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) phases. A six sigma black belt has a thorough understanding of how to implement, perform, interpret, and apply Lean Six Sigma at a high level.
Certification Testing
The Certified Black Belt Six Sigma Exam is a closed book, proctored, 150-question exam with a 4-hour time limit. Up to 15 non-graded questions may be included in some versions of this exam. The Exam consists of approximately 30 multiple-choice and true/false questions from each major section of the black belt six sigma Body of Knowledge and is administered in over 8,000 Testing Centers worldwide, as well as through the PeopleCert Online Proctoring system and hundreds of Accredited Providers.
Requirements
Candidates must pass the Certified Black Belt Six Sigma Exam with a minimum score of 70% to earn the professional distinction of Certified Black Belt from the International Association for Six Sigma Certification.

Preparation
It is encouraged, but not required, that persons interested in taking the exam acquire Lean Six Sigma training from a recognized university, Lean Six Sigma trainer, or corporate program. Certification
Professionals will obtain Black Belt Certification from the International Association for Six Sigma certification, a real independent third-party Certification Association within the Lean Six Sigma Industry if they complete the course successfully.
The certification is valid indefinitely. Effective March 1, 2017, a classification system recognizes certifications as “Current” for a period of three years and sets regulations for retaining such Status, according to the Recertification Policy.
The Certified Black Belt receives a Certificate (PDF) that includes a Certification Number, a badge (.png file), and the right to use the Certification Marks and Titles; a professional designation that may be used in resumes and public profiles such as LinkedIn, as long as the Marks Use Policy is followed.
